Brief History

IT was beginning of 1980 Shivally Industrial Area was formed by Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board with a total land area of approx. 90 acres at the end of Alevoor Road. However till 1984 none of the entrepreneurs came forward to set up industry as there was no facilities or infrastructure like water, road, power and telephones. In the year 1984-1985 M/s. Bakers Biscuits started the construction of their unit and simultaneously M/s. Abideep Interlock Pavers also started construction of the factory facilities.

In the year 1991-92 under the leadership of Mr. Vincent Pinto, Manipal Small Scale Industrial Association was established and the first meeting was conducted in the small factory shed of Mr. Haridas Prabhu. During this first seven years (1985-1993) before the formation of the association, the Industrial area was just like a unwanted and unattended area by KIADB or by the local authorities.

With lot of efforts by Mr. Vincent Pinto, Mr. Ram Nayak and Mr. Dinesh Kamath, we could enroll 14 members in the association. It was a big task to conduct meetings as we did not have any office or telephone system in the Industrial Area. The members elected Mr. Vincent Pinto as the President, Mr. Dinesh Kamath as the Hon. Secretary and Mr.Jyothischandra as the Treasurer. Thus the association started functioning in the year 1992 and used to have one meeting a month at Abideep factory premises or any of the Industrial Units in cycle. However, we managed to get around 35 members and association continued upto 1997 under the Presidentship of Mr. Vincent Pinto.

This (MASIA) Industrial Association was continued upto 1998 and achieved lot of successes in bringing up Shivally Industrial Area into a better shape with the support of following office bearers.

In the year 1997-98 undivided district South Canara was bifurcated and Manipal came under Udupi District having 3 taluks, Kundapura, Karkala and Udupi. Therefore to strengthen the association of MASIA, took a major decision in the general body to convert this association into a district association. In the meeting it was unanimously decided and elected Mr. Vasanth V. Salian as the President of District Small Industries Association, Udupi ® and Mr. Jayanth Arora as the Hon. Secretary for the year 1998-99.

The association continued its work under the leadership of Mr. Vasanth V. Salian and in the year 2000 got a piece of land in the industrial area for construction of association building. It was the personal efforts of Mr. Vincent Pinto as building committee chairman of the Association Building was completed with a cost of Rs. 14.00 lakhs in the year 2003. The building has a office room, 3 shops and a 150 capacity meeting hall with all modern amenities like sound system, stage, computer, overhead screen etc.

Mr. Vasanth V. Salian became the Minister of Fisheries and Ports in the year 2001 and hence Mr. Vishwanath Bhat became the President of DSIA and continued as below

At the time of President Vishwanath Bhat, we got our association building inaugurated by Mr. Vasanth V. Salian and also the magazine "The Entrepreneurs" startede to convey the important industrial news to our members. It was the great team effort of Mr. Vishwanath Bhat the membership of association reached to 221 nos.

Mattar Ganesh Kini took over Presidentship from Mr. Vishwanath Bhat in the year 2002 and continued as the president till 2006. In his region, we achieved to get the sub contract exchange established in our association building and we are proud that at present we have 272 members. The association did lot of activities, seminars and workshop under the leadership of Mattar Ganesh Kini.

In the month of September 2006 Mr. Sridhar Shenava took over the President ship from Mr. Ganesh Kini and has many places in pipeline to take the association to much higher achievements.
